Depo-Provera and Brain Tumors
A March 2024 BMJ study found that Depo-Provera is associated with an increased risk of meningioma, a noncancerous brain tumour. The authors of the study discovered that long-term usage of Depo-Provera increased the incidence of meningioma by 5.6 times.
There was a greater risk increase than with any other birth control strategy that was examined. Researchers cannot, however, definitively state that the shot causes meningioma because this was an observational study.
